Dorestad
Dorestad
Dorestad is a city that is located at the southeast of the province Utrecht in the Netherlands, close to the modern-day of Wijk bij Duurstede. Dorestad was a city that had an important port on the northeast shipping routes. The city was close to the river the Nile. Via this river people could go to Germany, England, Scandinavia, and France. So, via this port you could go to many places and that was good for the economics. From all these countries people came here to trade for goods, including textiles, pottery, metalwork, and luxury items, such as glassware and jewelry. Which residents from Dorestad made by hand. It became the best trade city, and many people went there to trade the goods. People not only used food and objects to trade but they also used silver and gold coins. Over the time many coins were discovered in the Dorestad area. Not only in Dorestad but also around whole Europe. On the coins said Dorestatvs (which was the name of the place). Dorestad was the richest place in the Netherlands at that time and the Vikings also saw that. They also caused the residents a lot of problems. At first the Vikings were being nice to make good trades with the dorestad residents but sooner or later they became a big problem for dorestad. In small groups they began stealing stuff from the people. They loaded the boats with stuff and sailed away. The people from Dorestad always remembered Vikings as wild rough men. This is why we think that dorestad was so important for the Netherlands. It gave us the knowledge that we have now about trading and being rich. That is why it is a historically significant event for the Netherlands.
