Slavery monument Rotterdam

The slavery monument was built to commemorate the Dutch slavery past. The Slavery Monument was unveiled on June 16, 2013. It was built in Rotterdam and it stands on the Lloydkade. The design was made by Alex da Silva. The monument was made at this location, because Rotterdam was/is the port city of the Netherlands. The monument stands on the place where ships left for the triangular trade in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The triangular trade: first ships go from west Europe (the Netherlands) go with weapons and materials to Africa. The Africans are captured and enslaved. The slaves were brought to South America to work on the plantations there. Finally the ships return to Europe to take all the products from the plantations and sell them there.

The monument is made of corten steel and hot-dip galvanized steel. It is 9 meters long, 1.2 meters wide and 4.5 meters high. The monument depicts a ship on which slaves are dancing for their freedom
