The Dutch NAP1325 community

How government and civil society joined efforts on Women Peace and Security

After the ratification of the Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security, the Netherlands started to develop policies to implement the resolution. The process started with the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who issued a common policy document. The decision to start a practical, specific action plan was taken in a meeting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with 70 civil society organisations, under the leadership of Minister Koenders. It developed into a vibrant learning community on security issues related to women in situations of armed conflict. The trend of this period was to foster cooperation between military and development, between men and women, between feminist movements and government agencies and between religious and human rights movements involved in the Women, Peace and Security agenda.
