FINISH MONDIAL : a new approach

Financial INclusion Improves Sanitation and Health

To fulfil the 50 million target, the FINISH Mondial approach is successfully implemented

WASTE developed a tangible approach to fulfil the 50 million target through the FINISH Mondial approach. This is a significant sanitation initiative designed to improve health and socio-economic conditions in underserved communities across six countries: Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The program is a continuation of earlier FINISH projects in India and Kenya, expanding its reach globally with a focus on achieving sanitation for all.

The primary aim of FINISH Mondial is to provide safe sanitation solutions to 10 million people by constructing 2 million toilets by 2025. This ambitious goal is supported by leveraging €40 million in grant funding, which is expected to catalyze up to €440 million in total sanitation investments through a 1:10 funding ratio. Additionally, the program aims to recycle 175,000 tonnes of faecal sludge, contributing to environmental sustainability while improving public health outcomes

The program employs a multi-stakeholder approach, engaging various sectors to address both the supply and demand sides of sanitation:

  • Financial Inclusion: By collaborating with local financial institutions, the program aims to make financing accessible for households and sanitation entrepreneurs
  • Capacity Building: Training local masons and entrepreneurs fosters local business development and creates job opportunities, generating approximately 16 million working days in construction alone
  • Community Engagement: Initiatives like community-led total sanitation (CLTS) are used to raise awareness and stimulate demand for safe sanitation facilities among community members

The core of the FINISH Mondial initiative is based on WASTE's Diamond Model which emphasises collaboration among businesses, financiers, communities, and governments to develop local sanitation markets tailored to the needs of impoverished populations

FINISH Mondial not only focuses on immediate sanitation improvements but also aims for long-term sustainability by integrating sanitation solutions with other sectors such as agriculture and renewable energy. This holistic approach ensures that waste is treated as a resource, promoting circular economy principles where nutrients from human waste can be recycled for agricultural use or converted into renewable energy.

Through its structured methodology and partnerships with various stakeholders—including NGOs, government agencies, and private sector actors—FINISH Mondial is positioned as a transformative initiative that addresses critical sanitation challenges while fostering economic resilience and environmental sustainability in the regions it serves.
