Inspired by the 1st International Seminar on Human Waste Management and the work done by UNICEF in India, the staff developed a ‘sanitation garden’ at the ARDHI Institute in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). One of the students on the photos taken in 1983, Joyce Ndesamburo, became a leading Water for People and UN-Habitat sanitation expert and was also involved n the development of the MAPET, WASTE's semi-mechanical pit emptying device.
