This topic timeline is about Global Citizenship. After a general historic introduction on
global citizenship experiences in various cultural realms and the development of the global citizenship concept in Europe, it seeks to record the history of Global Citizenship in Dutch society and in its development cooperation over the period 1945-2023 in the international context. It shows how Global Citizenship gained prominence in that period across various thematic areas, looking at various aspects of international solidarity, Dutch involvement abroad, and more. The timeline is based on relevant policy and other documents as well as the experiences of the involved resource persons.
After the NCDO (Nationale Commissie voor internationale samenwerking en duurzame ontwikkeling) ceased operations in 2017, the NICC Foundation received a part of its collection, followed by the full archive of the organisation in 2023, with the task of making NCDO-material available to the public. One aspect of this work is building on the NCDO’s mission and its knowledge and expertise on global citizenship. The result of this work is this global citizenship timeline that will be expanded with a specific sub-timeline dealing with the NCDO history.
Although quite some information has been gathered so far, NICC timelines are never finished. If you have input for one of our timelines, feel free to contact us! You can do so by sending an email to info@stichtingnicc.nl.
