Recent and Current Developments

Looking back and towards the future

The Policy and Operations Evaluation Department (IOB) of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated a series of impact evaluations of water supply and sanitation projects and programmes supported by the Netherlands. In May 2010 the Impact Evaluation of FaDWaSP was published, evaluating 19 years of Netherlands support to the Governorate of Fayoum. In 2011 the Arab Spring started, leading to a period of political instability and changes.
Since 2011 no major investments in the water and wastewater infrastructure were made.

Over the years  wastewater management has deteriorated and has become  a serious threat to the people of Fayoum Governorate.
Raw sewage directly discharged to the agricultural drains, eventually flows into Lake Qarun, causing continuous  environmental, economic and social harm.
In 2019 FWWC operates 23 WWTPs with a total wastewater treatment capacity of 272,000 m3 per day. Access to sanitation in the rural areas is 48%.

In 2017 a feasibility study was carried out for preparing a large investment program: Fayoum Wastewater Expansion Project (FWEP). Through funding by EBRD, EIB and EU the first phase will be implemented in the period 2019-2023 and aims to increase access to sanitation in Fayoum Governorate’s rural areas from 48% to 86%; which will improve social conditions, restore economic welfare whilst safeguarding the environment.

The Project will expand sewer services in approximately 119 un-served villages in Fayoum Governorate, increasing access to sanitation to 70% and benefitting around 700,000 people. A 2nd Phase, if everything goes according to plan, will include a further 41 un-served villages, benefiting an additional 240,000 people increasing access to 86%.
